All of our Moodle themes are now fully compatible with Moodle 5.2

Best Moodle 5.3 Themes: How to Choose a Compatible Theme

Comparison of modern Moodle 5.3 course theme layouts on several devices

Quick answer: The best Moodle 5.3 theme is not simply the most colourful demo. It is the theme that explicitly supports 5.3, survives your real course content, remains accessible and has a credible maintenance path. Because Classic was removed from core and Moodle now uses Bootstrap 5.3.8, old compatibility claims are not enough.

Our evaluation criteria

We prioritise explicit 5.3 support, Boost-based architecture, accessibility, mobile behaviour, upgrade history, documentation and the ability to reproduce the demo without undocumented custom work. We do not claim hands-on testing of every commercial theme; compatibility must be confirmed from the vendor’s current release notes.

Start with verified compatibility

Look for the exact words “Moodle 5.3,” not a broad “Moodle 5.x” badge. Check the download package, release date and changelog. Ask whether the package supports PHP 8.3/8.4, Bootstrap 5.3.8 and Moodle’s current Mustache templates.

Test the pages that expose theme problems

  • Dashboard with empty, short and very long course names
  • Course pages with drawers, blocks and linear navigation
  • Quiz attempts, assignment grading and question bank
  • RTL and multilingual content where relevant
  • Phone, tablet, keyboard and 200% zoom
  • Light and dark appearance if the theme advertises both

AlmondB is the confirmed free option

Compatibility status: AlmondB’s free Moodle 5.3 release is now available in Moodle Marketplace. It is Boost-based and can be downloaded without purchasing a licence. At the time of this review, Almond Pro, Zuum, EduCard and Wellko have not yet released their Moodle 5.3 packages; their developer says those updates are planned. Do not use a 5.2 premium package on 5.3 while waiting.

This post contains commercial links. If you buy through them, the site may earn revenue. That does not change the compatibility criteria.

Download the free AlmondB theme for Moodle 5.3 or compare the premium Almond theme features for currently supported versions.

The safest buying decision

Shortlist two or three themes, obtain the exact 5.3 package, and test them on a staging copy with your own courses. A polished homepage cannot compensate for broken grading screens, inaccessible navigation or an uncertain update policy.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Moodle 5.2 theme be used on 5.3?

Not safely by assumption. Use a package whose vendor explicitly declares Moodle 5.3 support and test it on staging.

Is Boost the safest theme?

Boost has the lowest third-party dependency risk because it ships with Moodle, but a maintained commercial theme can offer useful branding and layout tools.

Which Almond theme is confirmed for 5.3?

AlmondB is available as a free Moodle 5.3 release in Moodle Marketplace. Almond Pro, Zuum, EduCard and Wellko are planned but not yet published for 5.3.

When to bring in specialist help

Use an experienced Moodle administrator or hosting engineer when the work changes database major versions, authentication, production routing, custom plugins or a heavily modified theme. Record the change, test it away from production and keep a named rollback owner.

Final recommendation

Use a staging site, rely on version-specific evidence and keep a tested rollback path. Moodle 5.3 is a strong long-term target, but a controlled upgrade is more valuable than an early upgrade that breaks teaching workflows.
